Memorial Day

On my grandfather's headstone it says that he fought in three wars. Now I will say that most of his time in the field was actually in a ship. He was the head of the galley and fed thousands of men on that ship and also supplied other ships as they went by. He would make donuts for the higher ups on other ships and send poems along with them, silly poems (I come by my gift honestly it appears :)). And he kept those poems and the ones that sometimes the grateful higher ups would send back as a thank you. Someday I would love to publish that book if for no other reason than it deserves to be out there, to humanize and ground the soldiers who are out there giving of their time, their expertise and sometimes their very lives to make sure that you and I can live in this great country and have our freedom too.

Happy Memorial Day! If you see a soldier and can manage it, don't just say thank you, take their hand, the one that might have had to hold a gun and shake it with your heart in your eyes.
